Selling your vehicle to a wrecker in New Zealand
When a car, van or truck reaches the end of the road, a lot of people assume the paperwork is the same as any other sale. It is not. Selling a vehicle that will keep being driven is a change of ownership. Selling a vehicle to a wrecker is the start of taking that vehicle off the road for good, and the registration side of it works differently. This post walks through what NZTA asks you to do so there are no surprises later.
Let NZTA know you have sold it
If you sell a registered vehicle to a wrecker, you need to tell NZTA that you have done this. You can do it online through the "sold or disposed of a vehicle" form, or by calling them. This matters because the person recorded as the registered person stays on the hook for the vehicle until the record is updated. Once a wrecker takes the vehicle, it becomes their responsibility to cancel the registration, but your notice of disposal is what starts that process cleanly.
Cancelling the registration and handing in the plates
You also have the option to cancel the registration yourself before the vehicle goes to the wrecker. To do that you complete an application to cancel registration (form MR15) at a registration agent, and you hand in the number plates.
Cancelling registration is the correct step whenever a vehicle is destroyed, permanently removed from New Zealand, becomes permanently useless, or is written off. In each of those cases the registered person is expected to surrender the plates and notify the cancellation without delay.
Getting a refund of unused licence fees
There is money to be aware of here. If you return the plates and the licence label, NZTA will refund any licence (rego) fees you have paid for but not used. If your bank account is on their record, that refund is paid automatically.
Sometimes the plates cannot be handed back because the vehicle has already been crushed or dismantled. In that case you can ask the wrecker for a letter confirming the vehicle was destroyed. If a fire or accident is the reason the plates are gone, a letter from the police or fire service does the same job. Where the plates simply cannot be surrendered, you can email refunds@nzta.govt.nz with a short explanation and your bank account details, and the request is assessed case by case.
How a wrecked car sale is different
It helps to line the two situations up side by side.
A normal private sale keeps the vehicle on the road. You notify NZTA straight away at the time of sale, you provide the buyer's full name and address, and both you and the buyer confirm the change so the vehicle moves to a new registered person. If you skip this, you can be left carrying the new owner's tolls, tickets and licence fees for a car you no longer own.
Selling to a wrecker goes the other way. The vehicle is leaving the fleet, so instead of transferring it to a new keeper you cancel the registration, surrender the plates, and may get money back for the rego you had not used. There is no new registered person to chase, because the vehicle is not going to be driven again.
