Most popular EVs in June 2021

There were 349 new and 82 used electric vehicles registered in June 2021 [1]. Each month we create a list of the top 10 most popular EVs by make and model. In June Tesla overtook Nissan as the most popular EV. The impact of EV rebates on EV registrations will become clear in the coming months but so far the data is unlikely to reflect any impact from the EV policy changes.

Climate Commission Report & Vehicle Industry

The Climate Change Commission released their report this week. In this blog post we examine Chapter 14 of the report titled “Policy direction for transport”. We restrict our review to recommendation 17 (Improve mobility options and reduce emissions) and 18 (Accelerate emissions reductions from the light vehicle fleet) within that chapter. We could cover the remainder of that chapter pertaining to transport vehicles at a later time.

Top 10 New Vehicles May 2021

New passenger car and commercial vehicle registrations picked up again in May 2021 (the second highest monthly registrations so far this year) [1]. Toyota was the top new vehicle make added to the NZ fleet for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles. This blog lists the top 10 new vehicles added to the NZ national fleet in May 2021 and compares them to the previous months. Top 10 new passenger cars in May 2021 Toyota remained in the top of the table for new passenger cars in May, having been there last month too. Toyota remains New Zealand’s most beloved and trusted passenger car. Mitsubishi remained in second position in the list. Honda and Subaru are new entrants in the top 10 list for passenger cars. Hyundai dropped two positions in the table to number 8. Volkswagen saw a 51.5% jump in registrations compared to April and jumped two positions in the table to number 6 on the list. Toyota continuously tops the list of most new car registrations by make and therefore can be regarded as the most popular car in NZ. Cars & Cows, a New Zealand problem

Last week students across the country marched in the School Strike 4 Climate protest for climate change and global warming [1]. News media are taking up related topics and electric vehicles (EVs) is a popular one [2]. This is understandable, after all about a quarter of NZ’s greenhouse gases are produced by vehicles. At the same time it raises questions because 75% of NZ’s greenhouse gases are from manufacturing, construction and dairy industries among others [3]. So, is the adoption of electric vehicles about moving to a zero carbon economy or about acquiring new things that look nice and are fashionable? In this blog post I argue that in reality it is a bit about the former but a bit more about the latter too.
