To dig or to recycle? Can End of life cars be a secondary source of materials?

We all know that wrecked cars can be sold to auto Dismantlers for their metal content and parts. In this blog post we dig a little deeper to learn about the metal composition of cars. Beyond the value of a car for the salvageable parts, the metal content determines its scrap value and recycling stages. We explore if End of vehicles (ELVs) can be recycled for all of the metals used during production and if not what prevents us from doing so. As of 2010 there are more than a billion cars worldwide on our roads, driveways and in our garages. The global population is increasing and that too at an increasing rate and this is likely going to result in increased demand for more private vehicles. Analysis of Written off vehicles in New Zealand from Jan to Jul 2019 (part one)

We take a look at the publicly available data from New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and Statistics New Zealand (SNZ) from January to July 2019 about the number of written off vehicles that is maintained in the damaged vehicle list. Our purpose here will be to forecast the number of damaged, end of life vehicles for the remainder of year. We will try and cover some of the required work in this blog and tackle the rest in future blog posts. The damaged vehicle list includes Flood-water damaged vehicles Fire damaged vehicles Written off vehicles (Declared so by the owner through a statutory declaration for what ever purpose. We will also assume that the vehicles had approached their “natural” of life cycle or were too expensive to repair.) Written off due to flood Written off due to fire damage Here, we are interested in the last three items on the list. A quick look at the data shows that approximately 1500 vehicles were written off in the first six months of the current year.
